This is the only picture I could get of the Derby field.

Bi-partisans waiting for the field to come around...

The new Taj Mahal of racetracks

The Bad Year Blimp

Some horses galloping out

Record crowds = Long betting window lines

If you are going to the infield with a chair, you have to use Gate 3 only.

Ah...southern hospitality!

The 131st running of the Kentucky Derby (GI, $2,000,000 added)

I got lucky on Derby Day. A school bus pulled into the parking lot with a ton of cases of beer on it and a whole bunch of college kids. For ten bucks, I got 4 beers and a ride to the infield gate.

Ugh, the infamous City of Louisville Derby "shuttle."

A coal train goes through.

There's the train tracks that run behind the town of Matewan. Coal goes by all day and night.

Rails point to the next coal town.

Matewan National Bank

The church. They are big on churches in West Virginia and Eastern Kentucky.

May 19, 1920. Its rumored now that the sheriff shot the mayor in the back during the battle because he was sleeping with the mayor's wife. He actually did marry the mayor's wife like a week later.

Downtown Matewan

These plugs were put in, in place of the bullets which hit this wall during the Matewan Massacre

The story of the Matewan Massacre

Landmarked...as of 1997.

Coal cars on rails in the hills. This is on the way to Matewan, WV

The old Matewan train station. Now it is a museum.

The site of the Matewan Massacre

Frank Justice Furniture. The mayor's name is Frank Justice. Coincidence? In a town of 6000 people...maybe.

Pikeville!

The Pike County Tourism train...CHOO CHOO!

This is the sign on the door of the Big Sandy Heritage Center. Its too cliche to be true!

Oh wow, maybe I'll book a room for Hillbilly Days!

Oh...please.

Check out how funky this place is. Leather headboard, mirror on the wall. Nice.

This place is older than the Rat Pack.

Downtown Pikeville...west

Here's where I stayed, the Landmark Inn.

Downtown Pikeville...east

Pikeville, KY, in the eastern coal mountains. How I got here is a long story. But ask me, and I'll tell you. This place is scary.

Whoa, Pike County KY!
